On the surface, the chemistry is simple: hydrogen combined with oxygen produces water vapor. However, the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report makes it abundantly clear that CO2 is not the only driver of aviation's climate impact. We have to account for non-CO2 effects, specifically the formation of contrails and the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the upper troposphere.

Water vapor is itself a potent greenhouse gas. When emitted directly into the cold, humid layers of the upper atmosphere, it creates persistent contrails that trap outgoing longwave radiation. In fact, some models suggest the radiative forcing from these contrails could outweigh the CO2 benefits. We are essentially replacing one thermal blanket with another, while Airbus markets it as a "green revolution."

Furthermore, the energy density of liquid hydrogen is an absolute nightmare. To store it, you need cryogenic tanks at -253 degrees Celsius. The energy required to liquefy this hydrogen—which, let's be honest, is currently produced primarily via steam methane reforming (SMR) from fossil fuels—often exceeds the carbon savings of the flight itself. Unless we have a planetary-scale leap in electrolysis powered by 100% renewable energy (which NOAA’s current infrastructure data suggests is a fantasy), "green hydrogen" is a thermodynamic lie.

I am writing this while a sidebar ad for "Tactical Survival Buckets" flashes in my peripheral vision, promising to save me from the "coming storm." The irony is physically painful. We are not facing a "storm"; we are facing the permanent destabilization of the Holocene.
