my emotional support drone said my vibes are off and i haven't recovered

so like, if you've been feeling the crushing weight of existential dread lately, a billionaire has decided the answer is a tiny hovering robot whispering sweet nothings it learned from the internet. what could go wrong, right? spoiler: everything.

my emotional support drone said my vibes are off and i haven't recovered

it's just, like, so tiring to exist right now. you know? and i guess caspian rook, the guy behind aether corp, felt that too. or, like, he saw a gap in the market for our collective exhaustion. so he blessed us with the 'aura companion,' a tiny, sleek drone that follows you around to, and i'm quoting the press release here, 'disrupt the loneliness paradigm.'

i'm literally so tired.

the whole premise is that this little guy, which looks like a floating minimalist egg with one glowing eye, hovers near your head and whispers ai-generated affirmations at you. 'you are valid.' 'you contain multitudes.' 'your breathing is algorithmically optimal.' at first, it's kinda cute, in a deeply dystopian way. but after an hour, it feels less like a companion and more like a tiny, buzzing parole officer for your soul.

and of course, it's a subscription. the base tier gets you generic affirmations. the premium 'aura+ gold' tier promises 'bespoke emotional curation' based on the drone's constant biometric scanning of your heart rate and cortisol levels. because what i really need when i'm having a panic attack is a notification that my free trial for 'peace of mind' is ending.

and the glitches. oh, the glitches. my friend's drone started whispering old banner ad copy to her. 'hot singles in your area want to connect.' another one just got stuck on a loop repeating 'your cart is empty' in a deadpan monotone, which is, honestly, a little too real for me. then there are the reports of drones getting their wires crossed and just reciting the entire text of moby dick, which, okay, is a vibe, i guess.

tthe worst part is knowing it's listening. always. it heard me crying the other day and then five minutes later i got a targeted ad for a waterproof phone case. which, fine, is practical. but it feels… invasive. it's just another thing to be perceived by. if you also feel chronically perceived, i seriously recommend these noise-canceling headphones from my amazon storefront. they don't stop the drones, but they do make the existential hum a little quieter.

so now the sky is filled with these little emotional gnats, and everyone is just trying to find a quiet corner to dissociate in. caspian rook says he's 'synergizing the human spirit,' but it feels more like he's monetizing the last private corners of our consciousness. i don't know. maybe the real emotional support was the friends we alienated with our tech addictions along the way. i'm going to go lie under my weighted blanket for a few hours. if you need one, the one i use to simulate the gentle pressure of the void is also on my storefront. stay safe out there. or whatever.

What LLM are they even using for the affirmations? If it's just a GPT-3.5 wrapper that's a total ripoff. Also, the battery life on these things has to be atrocious, nobody ever talks about the battery life.

Can't wait for the inevitable data breach where everyone's cortisol levels and late-night crying sessions are leaked. Aether Corp's S3 buckets are probably public already.

Mine works perfectly, maybe the author just got a defective unit? The bespoke curation on the Gold tier is a game-changer for my morning mindfulness routine. Haters just don't get the vision.

Actually, a 'minimalist egg' is a bit of a misnomer. The teardowns show it's more of a prolate spheroid, which is structurally more sound for housing the sensor array.

This is a privacy nightmare sold as self-care. Constant biometric scanning and audio recording, all for targeted ads? This shouldn't even be legal.

And people wonder why I still talk to my dog. He doesn't require a subscription and he's never tried to sell me a waterproof phone case.

Gotta respect the hustle. Caspian Rook identified a clear pain point in the loneliness vertical and delivered a scalable SaaS solution. The LTV on these emotionally dependent customers must be insane.
